Why You’ll Love It

We have to say, we’re pretty pleased with ourselves for having found the Haadson Resort. This family-friendly hotel is located just 90 minutes from Phuket but is a million miles away in terms of space and serenity. Here you’ll find just 39 rooms, divided between Coconut Rooms and Villas, and the thoughtful design and layout leaves you with a glorious sense of being outdoors all the time.

Onsite the hotel has one main restaurant, a bar and small café. Food is not the strong point unfortunately given how delicious Thai food can be, but there are a handful of restaurants just next door that are very good. There’s a lovely swimming pool, cosy library and a small massage sala where you can enjoy being pummelled while listening to the sound of the sea.

The Haadson is just a short walk from the beach and when we visited in ‘shoulder season’ (October) there were hardly any other people there save for a handful of Thai families. The hotel helped organise a number of excursions for us that were truly excellent. All we had to do was turn up armed with sunscreen and a camera and we were whisked away to a deserted island where our very own captain sliced freshly picked coconuts and pineapples for us. Family holidays don’t get much better than this.

Why The Kids Will Love It

The Haadson is not your typical family resort. It does not boast a kids’ club or pool, nor does it offer dedicated activities for children. And yet this is a wonderful place for families to stay. The staff are extremely friendly and were endlessly accommodating when we visited. And the small, intimate atmosphere makes the Haadson feel much more like a family-run hotel than a big cookie-cutter chain.

Our kids spent their days on the beach swimming and searching in tidal pools, collecting hermit crabs, looking at sea urchins and discovering that sea cucumbers are somewhat different to the cucumbers found in supermarkets. The hotel gardens, home to lizards, frogs and other beasties, are perfect for running around and exploring. The central swimming pool is ideal for kids of all ages with a shallow stepped area for novice swimmers.

One word of caution, you are not near anything here (one of the things we loved about it) so if you’re looking for shops and bars then this is not the place for you. If, however, you want a week of quality family time, then this is an excellent choice.

Food:

The main restaurant at Haadson is the Terrace Restaurant that overlooks Bangsak Beach and serves both Thai and international cuisines. For light meals and snacks, there’s the Petite Bar & Café located on the pool deck.

During high season breakfast is a buffet. At all other times it’s a la carte and you can choose from juices, cereals, waffles, pancakes, fruits, bread, eggs cooked to order and plenty of tea and coffee. Thai breakfasts are also an option.

Lunch and dinner at the Terrace Restaurant receive mixed reviews from guests. The menu features a range of Thai and international dishes and although the food was good when we visited, the local dishes were somewhat bland and missing that special zing that we’ve come to know and love with Thai food.

For Kids: There is no dedicated kids’ menu but child-friendly pastas feature on the main menu. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and they were even willing to whip up a pancake for a very tired toddler when we stayed.
