Eleonas Traditional Resort Zaros is a terrific find for families in Crete. The 22 stone cottages are set against a beautiful backdrop of majestic peaks and the region is home to some of Crete’s best hiking trails. Eleonas is a working farm; they grown their own fruit and veg, produce their own olive oil and keep goats and chickens.

2. Ammos Hotel, Chania
In Chania, Ammos Hotel Crete is a small boutique hotel that markets itself as being one of the best hotels in Crete for families, particularly for infants and young children.
Located on the beach about 5km outside the main port area, Ammos is like a stylish mini family resort with whitewashed walls, blue doors and cool contemporary designs. 3. Paradise Island Villas
The Paradise Island Villas its just outside Anissaras, close to Heraklion. The 12 modern villas sit surrounded by flowers and palm trees and each one comes with its own private pool. In case that’s not enough, there’s another pool on the hotel grounds as well as a tennis court. The villas are each name after Greek gods and come in varying sizes; the largest ones (the Superior Villas) can sleep up to six people.

4. Grecotel Marine Palace & Aqua Park
If you’re travelling with young children and want something very easy then take a look at the four star Grecotel Marine Palace and Aqua Park. This all-inclusive resort is kiddie heaven with its very own water park.
It’s positioned on the beach near the village of Panormos, on the northern coast of Crete. Accommodation is perfect for families with a range of bungalows and family suites available. There are kids clubs and open-air playgrounds, paddling pools and shallow waters for young kids, a seawater pool and plenty of organised activities for children aged 4-12-years-old. 5. Giorgi’s Blue Apartments, near Chania
For family apartments in Crete head to Giorgi’s Blue Apartments, a collection of 19 spacious and sunny apartments built in a traditional style. The child friendly resort is located 10km from Chania in Kalathas, very near to the sea.
Apartments come with either one- or two-bedrooms, a living room and at least one balcony. The complex also has a swimming pool, a children’s pool and access to a small, almost private, rocky bay. 6. Vamos Traditional Village, near Chania
Positioned midway between Chania and Rethymno, Vamos Traditional Village is one of the more unique Crete family resorts. This is not a hotel but rather a series of restored stone houses, plus a handful of new-build villas of varying sizes. A number of houses and villas are suitable for families and some have private or shared swimming pools. Vamos can also help organise activities such as cooking courses and orange picking.

7. Doge Traditional Hotel, Chania
Located in the heart of charming Chania is Doge Traditional Hotel. It’s a great option for families looking to explore the ancient Venetian port for a few days.
On offer are a number of suites that work well for families including the Junior Suites (for a family of 4) and the split-level Superior Suites (for a family of 5). 8. White River Cottages, Makrýgialos
On the east bank of the Áspros Potamós stream valley, about 1km inland from Makrýgialos, are the White River Cottages, characterful flat-roofed homes that were once used by olive pickers.
Today, the cottages offer a country retreat in the unspoilt eastern region of Crete. The rooms have self-catering facilities and vary in size. There’s also a central swimming pool for guests to use. White River Cottages are best suited for older kids as there are no specific children’s facilities.

You’ll find this sprawling five-star resort overlooking the Mirabello Bay of Elounda in north-eastern Crete. 12. St Nicolas Bay Resort, Ágios Nikólaos
Another very popular Crete family resort is the St Nicolas Bay Resort. The hotel is located on the Nisí peninsula’s north shore, 1500m outside of Ágios Nikólaos proper. Because of its location on the eastern side of the island, you’ll find it much less touristy than other parts of Crete.
The village-style resort is charming and has everything you could need to keep kids happy. There’s a spa, water sports programme, scuba diving and yacht charter. There’s also a kids’ club. In Heraklion is the Lato Boutique Hotel, a family-friendly bolthole ideal for exploring the sights of this ancient town. Heraklion can be expensive and this hotel represents a good deal, particularly for families.
