Family-Friendly Hotels in Crete
Following the popularity of our posts 10 Things to do in Crete with Kids and Crete with Kids: A Spring Time Family Adventure we have put together a list of what are, in our opinion, the best family-friendly hotels in Crete. Some have been tried and tested by George and Sarah (the authors of the above posts) and others are places that have come recommended. If you have any recommendations to add, we’d love to here them!
1. Creti.Co Villas
If your are looking to hire a villa in Crete then Creti.co have nearly 500 beautiful homes to choose from. Their portfolio of properties extends across the island and most, if not all, come with a swimming pool. Bookings are made directly with the villas owner. This is a great option for families.
2. Eleonas Traditional Resort Zaros
Eleonas Traditional Resort Zaros is a terrific find for families. The resort consists of cottages that are scattered around the property. They come in varying sizes and there is a shared pool on site. The property is located one-hour drive south of Heraklion.
3. Ammos Hotel, Chania
In Chania, Ammos Hotel is a small boutique hotel that is fantastic for families (it sells itself as being a family-friendly hotel, particularly for infants and young children. Located about 5km outside the main port area, on the beach, it has the added selling point of a heated pool.
4. Giorgi’s Blue Apartments, near Chania
Ten kilometres from Chania in Kalathas, is Giorgi’s Blue Apartments, a small family-friendly hotel near the sea. The hotel consists of 19 spacious and sunny apartments built in a traditional style.
5. Vamos Traditional Village, near Chania
Positioned midway between Chania and Rethymno, Vamos Traditional Village is not one hotel but a series of restored stone houses, plus a handful of new-build villas, that are positioned around the area. There are a number of houses and villas suitable for up to eight people, perfect for families, and some have private or shared swimming pools. Vamos can also help organise activities such as cooking courses and orange picking.
6. Elounda Garden Suites, Elounda
Near Elounda town is Elounda Garden Suites, a lovely hotel that has excellent family accommodation options; their Family Suites come with one separate bedroom with double bed and seating area with two sofa-beds. There’s a wonderful view and amazing breakfasts, too.
7. White River Cottages, Makrýgialos
On the east bank of the Áspros Potamós stream valley, about 1km inland from Makrýgialos, are the White River Cottages, characterful flat-roofed homes that were once used by olive pickers during the season. Today, they make for a peaceful getaway in a beautiful setting. Best suited for older kids as there are no specific children’s facilities.
8. Ikaros Beach Resort & Spa, Malia
Expect amazing service and family-friendly amenities at the Ikaros Beach Resort, a five-star resort located just one hour’s drive from Heraklion and within walking distance of Malia. There are four outdoor pools (including a dedicated pool for kids), several excellent restaurants and beautifully manicured gardens. Additional family-friendly touches include a babysitting service, a kids’ playground and dedicated activities for children.
9. St Nicolas Bay Resort, Ágios Nikólaos
Another very popular family resort is the St Nicolas Bay Resort that’s located on the Nisí peninsula’s north shore, 1500m outside of Ágios Nikólaos proper. There’s a spa, water sports programme, scuba diving school and yacht charter. Accommodation is family-friendly and there’s a kids’ club for young children.
10. Lato Boutique Hotel, Heraklion
In Heraklion is the Lato Boutique Hotel, a family-friendly bolthole ideal for exploring the sights of this ancient town. Heraklion can be expensive and this hotel represents a good deal, particularly for families. There are 79 rooms, some with balconies overlooking the Cretan sea, and three good restaurants. Several two-bedroom family rooms are available. A junior suite may also work for families with one young child.
