The Royal Sands in Cancun in Mexico is an all-inclusive resort that has everything you need to enjoy the ultimate Cancun family vacation. When you arrive you will be greeted with a warm smile and the excellent customer service attitude you would expect from a TripAdvisor Excellence award winner. In fact, this was the first thing I noticed, every single employee I encountered had a smile on their face and immediately wanted to help me or simply ask how I was doing. Most importantly, it felt very genuine. The staff seem to carry a sense of pride in their work and it makes a big difference when they interact with guests – everyone I met was just so helpful.
If the staff don’t immediately win you over, then perhaps the enormous pool that then draws your eye straight to the crystal clear waters of the ocean will. Before being lead to our room we stopped by the pool deck to take in this stunning view. Both the lap pool and the recreational pools are impressive and definitely take centre stage at this resort.
The Royal Sands is another property from Royal Resorts and is a bit different from The Royal Cancun that I had stayed at just a few days before. These two properties are both extremely kid-friendly but they offer a different style of family vacation. The Royal Sands has a few more bells and whistles than the Royal Cancun and is the perfect choice for families looking for a little more action and those luxury amenities while on vacation.
Rooms at The Royal Sands
The Royal Sands has been undergoing a large renovation of their rooms and a few key areas of the resort. So far they have updated about 80 of their 340 rooms and the refreshing modern decor with tropical blues and greens is a classy upgrade. The fully appointed master suites at this five-star resort are spacious and perfect for families or friends. They have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a well equipped kitchen, a living and dining area, walk-in closets, central air-conditioning and a spacious terrace with a spectacular view of the Caribbean sea.
The newly renovated suites are tastefully decorated with modern and chic accessories, the master suites can actually sleep up to six people (there are two pull down Murphy beds in the living room). My kids would love the Murphy bed feature! These two-bedroom suites also offer two different entrances, and the one bedroom can be locked off from the rest of the suite – which makes it perfect for traveling with the grandparents.
When I stayed I was fortunate enough to have one of the Ocean View Suites on the ground floor, which had a beautiful view over the Caribbean waters. It’s location was also very convenient to access both pools and get to the beach without having to navigate any long hallways, elevators or stairs. The property is huge, so being ocean front made it very easy to find my way around.
Dining Options at Royal Sands
There are a lot of dining options at the Royal Sands including Hacienda Sisal for Mexican cuisine in a traditional hacienda setting, La Veranda for international favorites and Sand Dollar, an open-air terrace restaurant serving ceviche, seafood tacos and sushi.
The poolside Char Hut serves lunch and snacks and for casual room dining. The Sidelines Sportsbar, which is also being renovated, is the perfect place to grab a drink, play some pool or watch your favorite sports team.
Health & Wellness at Royal Sands
This is one of the most impressive areas of the resort. The spa is a beautiful space and ideal for escaping the sun – or your kids! – for a few hours. They offer a variety of massages, facials, body wraps and scrubs. There are also two water circuit options you can experience where you dip into a number of pools of differing water temperatures. This circuit also includes the sauna and a large whirlpool. The spa facilities are available to use with any treatment but you can also buy a day pass for $13 to just visit the spa. There is also a full beauty salon for manicures, pedicures and a full hair salon.
There is also a state of the art gym with all the equipment you would need to get your workouts in. When I am on vacation in hot destinations, I prefer to get a good workout in in the morning in a nice air conditioned gym. This helps me feel better for the rest of the day – and helps me to think I have earned my cocktails by the pool! There is something to be said for a beautiful health and wellness center on the property – good habits do not have to stop the minute you are on vacation!
Activity Center & Kids Club
Keeping the kids entertained is usually the #1 priority when on vacation because, as we all know, they don’t usually understand the relaxation part of a vacation! The Royal Sands activity center is not short on exciting adventures and offers activities that the whole family will enjoy, from daily yoga classes, zumba and poolside bingo to pottery painting and even Spanish classes! They offer a fully supervised drop off kids club for kids ages four to 12-year-olds, offering non-stop fun for the little ones and activities such as beach volleyball, paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing for the older kids.
The Royal Sands also makes it easy and convenient to get out and see more of Cancun and I highly recommend you do. They have a an endless number of excursions for you to choose from and this is what really impressed me. Sometimes when I go on vacation with my family I want to be on vacation too, and so it’s nice when you can just show up and the logistics of where to go and what to see has already been organised for you. To a mom on vacation, an activity center like The Royal Sands is worth it’s weight in gold!
Your family can book a snorkelling or diving trip, explore the Mayan cities and sights of Chitchen Itza, Tulum and Coba, or you can spend the day at the popular activity parks of Xcaret or Xe-Hal and go ziplining and swim in a variety of beautiful cenotes. The only problem you’ll have is fitting it all in.
Saving Sea Turtles & Sustainability
During the summer, families staying at the resort may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a sea turtle laying its eggs on the beach in front of the resort at night. The Royal Sands participates in the sea turtle protection campaign that takes place throughout the Mexican Caribbean every year. You should definitely inquire about this while you are staying here, taking part in sea turtle conservation is something your kids will never forget!
From recycling and beach cleaning to a chef’s garden, energy efficient lighting and solar panels to heat water, many eco-friendly initiatives have been implemented at The Royal Sands. It is certified by the Mesoamerican Reef Tourism Initiative (MARTI) for its green program and was awarded the Distintivo S by the Mexican Tourism Board in 2013 for its commitment to sustainability.
Although I only stayed on the property for one night, it was easy for me to see how the Royal Sands offers families a dream Cancun vacation. It really has everything for a fun and adventurous holiday for all the family.
Booking at Stay at The Royal Sands
When choosing to stay at any of the Royal Resorts properties, you should make your reservation through their website Royal Reservations. This is essentially the best place to find all the information on the Royal Resorts properties and you’ll book with confidence knowing that your reservation is in their hands. They even offer a live chat, so you can ask more questions and make sure that you are booking the best family vacation for your family.
