When my son was born we swore that we would never succumb to portable DVD players, iPads or any other kind of electronic gadget to keep him entertained when travelling. If story books on cassette were good enough for us when we were young then they would certainly be good enough for him.  One long-haul flight later and we now own almost everything that the Mac store stocks and we never step on board a flight without making sure the iPad is fully charged. For all those parents who travel with crayons, a colouring book and nothing more, we salute you. For the rest, we are starting a new App of the Week series. As with our hotel & holiday recommendations, we will suggest Apps For You and Apps For The Kids.

Apps For You: TRVL Magazine

TRVL is a free travel magazine that covers a new destination or theme every issue. It’s filled with beautiful photography, good stories, interactive maps and slideshows and lots of “wish I was there” moments. Perfect for armchair travelling.

Apps For The Kids: Me Books

We love this. Created by British startup Made in Me, Me Books offers a library of digital books from a range of publishers (Penguin, Puffin, Ladybird and more are all on board) narrated by celebrities including Richard E. Grant and Sir David Jason. There’s also a ‘draw and record’ features where kids can drawn an area on-screen and then record their own words or sounds for it.
