Why you’ll love Haadson Resort
We have to say, we’re pretty pleased with ourselves for having found the Haadson Resort. This family-friendly hotel is located just 90 minutes from Phuket but is a million miles away in terms of space and serenity. Here you’ll find just 39 rooms, divided between Coconut Rooms and Villas, and the thoughtful design and layout leaves you with a glorious sense of being outdoors all the time.
Onsite the hotel has one main restaurant, a bar and small café. Food is not the strong point unfortunately given how delicious Thai food can be, but there are a handful of restaurants just next door that are very good. There’s a lovely swimming pool, cosy library and a small massage sala where you can enjoy being pummelled while listening to the sound of the sea.
The Haadson is just a short walk from the beach and when we visited in ‘shoulder season’ (October) there were hardly any other people there save for a handful of Thai families. The hotel helped organise a number of excursions for us that were truly excellent. All we had to do was turn up armed with sunscreen and a camera and we were whisked away to a deserted island where our very own captain sliced freshly picked coconuts and pineapples for us. Family holidays don’t get much better than this.
Why the kids will love Haadson Resort
The Haadson is not your typical family resort. It does not boast a kids’ club or pool, nor does it offer dedicated activities for children. And yet this is a wonderful place for families to stay. The staff are extremely friendly and were endlessly accommodating when we visited. And the small, intimate atmosphere makes the Haadson feel much more like a family-run hotel than a big cookie-cutter chain.
Our kids spent their days on the beach swimming and searching in tidal pools, collecting hermit crabs, looking at sea urchins and discovering that sea cucumbers are somewhat different to the cucumbers found in supermarkets. The hotel gardens, home to lizards, frogs and other beasties, are perfect for running around and exploring. The central swimming pool is ideal for kids of all ages with a shallow stepped area for novice swimmers.
One word of caution, you are not near anything here (one of the things we loved about it) so if you’re looking for shops and bars then this is not the place for you. If, however, you want a week of quality family time, then this is an excellent choice.
Haadson Resort offers 39 rooms made of up 20 Coconut Rooms and 19 Villas. All rooms enjoy their own private terrace with lake or garden views and are furnished with either king or twin beds.
Rooms come with the following amenities: AC, safe, bathrobes, beach sandals, telephone, minibar, writing desk, hairdryer, flashlight, satellite TV, tea and coffee making facilities, private furnished terrace, bathroom products and an umbrella. Internet access is not always possible in all rooms.
Coconut Rooms: There are five coconut villas and each villa houses four individual rooms, two on the ground floor and two on the first floor. Every room measure 45 sqm. The ground floor rooms provide direct access to the garden via the terrace and the first floor rooms enjoy a private balcony with garden views. Interconnecting rooms are available.
Villas: The 19 villas enjoy prime location with direct views of the lagoon. Each villa measures 53 – 55 sqm and comes with a private timber terrace. Additional features include a leather daybed on the terrace, a sliding console over the bed area (perfect for breakfast in bed!) and the bathrooms enjoy both an internal and external bath area. The Lakeside Villas have an open-air terrazzo bathtub and the Island Villas enjoy an open-air rain shower.
Best for Families: One extra bed and / or baby cot is permitted in each room.
Every room can accommodate a maximum of two adults and two children or three adults (children 12 years and older are classified as adults). The Coconut Rooms are further from the beach but are spacious and comfortable.
Rooms on the ground floor are great for families with little kids as they offer easy access to the garden. Inter-connecting rooms are available in this category.
The main restaurant at Haadson is the Terrace Restaurant that overlooks Bangsak Beach and serves both Thai and international cuisines. For light meals and snacks, there’s the Petite Bar & Café located on the pool deck.
During high season breakfast is a buffet. At all other times it’s a la carte and you can choose from juices, cereals, waffles, pancakes, fruits, bread, eggs cooked to order and plenty of tea and coffee. Thai breakfasts are also an option.
Lunch and dinner at the Terrace Restaurant receive mixed reviews from guests. The menu features a range of Thai and international dishes and although the food was good when we visited, the local dishes were somewhat bland and missing that special zing that we’ve come to know and love with Thai food.
For Kids: There is no dedicated kids’ menu but child-friendly pastas feature on the main menu. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and they were even willing to whip up a pancake for a very tired toddler when we stayed.
Activities for Parents: Swimming pool, beach, trip to Takuapa Old Town, snorkelling trip, boat rides to neighbouring islands, Thai massage, kayaking and mountain biking.
Activities for Kids: Swimming pool, beach, large gardens home to frogs, lizards and other beasties, tidal pools home to sea cucumbers and hermit crabs, board games in the hotel library, Sai Rung Waterfall, trekking in Khao Lak Lum Ru National Park and canoe trips down river.
AC, babysitting, common rooms, cots, doctors & hospitals, extra beds, inter-connecting rooms, laundry service, private sit out, pushchair friendly, shops, swimming pool, travel desk & excursions, wheelchair access, WiFi.
When to go:
The best time to visit is between November and April, when daytime temperatures reach the mid- to high-20Cs. This is also peak season, however, so hotels get busy and you will need to book in advance. The rainy season falls from somewhere in July through to October and the seas during this time are rough. Both Surin and Similan Islands National Marine Parks are closed.
