A Day Trip to Daranak Falls
Located in Tanay, Rizal, just a couple of hours from Manila are these 14-metre high waterfalls. We visited Daranak Falls for the day with a group of my daughter Maya’s school friends and had a wonderful day out. Positioned at the foot of the foot of the Tanay mountains and surrounded by lush, jungly vegetation, it makes for a beautiful escape from the city, particularly during the hot summer months. The area is very pretty with cascading rivers, turquoise pools and rocky outcrops.
For kids, this is a great adventure. Mine loved clambering over rocks, paddling in the cool waters and watching leaves float from pool to pool. Inner tubes are also available to rent so that you can float from pool to pool, which is incredibly relaxing – until a five-year-old climbs on-board! Older kids can jump off rocks into the deep pool, shower under the cascading waterfall and tumble in and out of inner tubes.
The main pool is very deep and there is no lifeguard so proper supervision and flotation devices are essential for less confident swimmers. Wear modest swimwear (most local women wear shorts and a t-shirt with swimming costume underneath). You are likely to attract unwanted attention in a bikini!
There are limited conveniences at the falls. The toilets are basic and there is only a tiny sari store selling snacks. It best to bring your own picnic or “baon”. You can grill food at the falls if you want on a mini barbecue party. It’s best to visit Daranak Falls in the morning; it gets crowded towards the afternoon especially on weekends or holidays.
Other essentials include mosquito repellent, bottled water, rubber shoes (for navigating sharp rocks) and a dry bag to protect clothes and valuables.
It takes 2-2.5 hours to reach the falls from Manila by private car. For more information on how to get here, take a look at the Daranak Falls Facebook page.
