Family Beaches & Backwaters, Kerala

Cochin – Backwaters – Marari Beach

DESCRIPTION

This seven-day family-friendly holiday is the perfect introduction to Kerala, one of the easiest states to travel in India with children. Explore magical Fort Cochin, float along the bewitching backwaters on your own private houseboat and then enjoy three days on the beach. The itinerary can be fully customised to suit your family’s requirements and may include:

  • Stroll the streets of historical Fort Cochin, an ancient trading port and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to age-old churches, colourful palaces and the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth.
  • Help the fishermen haul in their catch of the day using the enormous, cantilevered cheenavalas (Chinese Fishing nets), go shopping for antiques, stock up on spices and enjoy some of India’s tastiest curries at a breezy waterfront restaurant.
  • Take a sunset cruise around Fort Cochin’s harbour – watch the ferries criss-cross across to the mainland and keep an eye out for the friendly resident dolphins.
  • Experience the rural lifestyle of the backwaters as you glide along on your houseboat past villages, temples, churches, buffalos wading, people bathing and fishermen hauling in their catch. Kids can help the driver steer the ‘floating hotel’.
  • Bring your binoculars and see if you can spot some of the incredible birdlife that lives in the backwaters including kingfishers, darters and cormorants. You’ll see an amazing variety of butterflies and dragonflies too.
  • Visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, home to egrets, herons and cormorants and more as well as the migratory Siberian crane.
  • Build sandcastles, splash in the waves or simply soak up the sun at Marari Beach.
  • Tour the local coir making shops and visit the colourful local temples by auto rickshaw.
  • Borrow a bicycle and pedal your way around the local fishing villages and then try to spot all 90 species of butterfly in the Butterfly Park.

KIDS

This slow-paced tour is ideal for the whole family with a good balance of activities and time by the beach. Younger globetotters might find life on the houseboat rather slow, however it’s a fantastic experience and most kids revel in sleeping on a ‘floating hotel’. Houseboats by their very nature have a lot of open space and if you’re travelling with little kids and toddlers then you will need to be on your guard. Alternatively you may choose to stay in one of our favourite backwaters hotels where you can enjoy a half-day excursion on the waterways and then sleep on dry land. Families travelling with babies and little kids may prefer this option.

ITINERARY

This holiday traditionally starts and ends in Cochin, Kerala however it can be fully customised to suit your family’s requirements. See sample itinerary below:

Day 1-2: Fort Cochin

Overnight: Two-night stay at a hotel in Cochin.

Day 3: Backwaters

Car: 1 – 1.5 hrs.

Overnight: Deluxe Houseboat

Day 4-7: Marari Beach

Car: 30 mins.

Overnight: Three-night stay at a hotel in Marari Beach.

WHEN TO GO

The best time to enjoy this tour is between October and April when daytime temperatures hover around 32C and nighttime temperatures around 20C. This is also the peak tourist season, however. If you plan to visit over this period then make sure to book well in advance and be prepared to pay more for hotels, particularly over Christmas and New Year. The monsoon rains fall between July and September. The ten-day Onam festival is held in August and is Kerala’s biggest cultural carnival held to celebrate the mythical King Mahabali.

Tips!

Houseboats tend to drop anchor around 6pm so bring even distractions for the kids. Bring your binoculars and a copy of Salim Ali’s The Book of Indian Birds to help you identify the multi-coloured birdlife of the backwaters and make sure to pack Arundhati Roy’s beautiful Booker Prize-winning book The God of Small Things set on the backwaters of Kerala. Don’t forget globetotting’s pocket-sized Family Guide to Cochin and Cochin-themed kids’ activity booklets!

My Family Holiday: Lazy Kerala Backwaters

…. The kids loved being on the boat. My son rode up near the boatman and got to ‘drive’ by turning the wheel. The views are stunning… endless lazy rivers, little settlements. Read more…
