Why You’ll Love It

Family House Lombok was recommended by some friends and ended up being a great choice. Located on the south coast of the island, near Kuta beach, the area is clean, quiet and well maintained – a far cry from busy, crowded Bali.

The hotel itself is simple with fourteen large, clean rooms attached to a long-standing bar and restaurant. The staff were amazing when we stayed and nothing was too much trouble for them. The hotel is well positioned; there’s a pharmacy across the road, an emergency doctor’s clinic and plenty of cafés and restaurants.

There’s little to do at the hotel itself but there’s plenty to keep you occupied nearby. We surfed, played on the beach with the kids, went snorkelling and ate awesome chocolate cake at the nearby Ashtari coffee shop. What more could you ask for from a holiday?

Why The Kids Will Love It

We spent five nights here with our three kids and it was a great base for us. The hotel is simple but the helpful staff and activities offered nearby made for a really fun stay. We hired a car and driver daily and visited local beaches including Selong Blanak Beach, which is really good for surfing and swimming.

Another favourite was Tanjung A’an Beach, an touched strip of sand where our kids swam in the sea and my daughter ate what she described as some of the best chicken curry every at the small Warung Turtles café. Go quick, however, as word has it that Club Med have recently purchased this beach.

One of the highlights of our stay were the traditional bangka boats. We hired these to take us out to the surf breaks and the kids had a ball jumping from the boats into the water. Every boat is slightly different and the novelty never wore off for our three! On dry land the kids took great pleasure in the numerous animals around the place and spent all the time that they weren’t eating ‘Lombok lollipops’ (pineapples on a stick!) learning how to say cow, water buffalo and chicken in the local dialect.

Hotel Details

Rooms:

Family House Lombok has 14 rooms: three Suites with views of Kuta Beach, five Deluxe Rooms overlooking the pool and garden and six Superior Rooms. All rooms enjoy enormous bathrooms with showers and baths.

The deluxe rooms are positioned on the ground floor alongside suites number 4 and 7. The superior rooms are located on the second floor as well as suite number 2. Suite 3 is on the third floor. The suites and deluxe rooms come with a bath in the bathroom, the superior rooms have a shower. There are no safes in the rooms but there is one at reception.

Best rooms for families: Family House Lombok is very accommodating with extra beds and will fit one, two and sometimes three extra beds per room. We took two rooms – a suite and a deluxe that sit next to each other on the ground floor. These worked really well as both have a small outdoor terrace that leads directly onto the pool. There are no inter-connecting rooms.

Food:

The hotel restaurant is open daily 7am – 11pm. Breakfast is included and consists of your standard eggs, nasi goring, banana pancakes, fruit, fruit juices and awesome smoothies. In fact, our kids kept escaping their room and we’d find them propped up at the bar ordering another smoothie! There are no cereals so bring your own if this is a family breakfast staple.

Food is available throughout the day and the menu offers traditional Lombok, Indonesian and European food with pizza, pasta, local Sasak food, soups and salads all on offer. The menu did feel a little tired after a while but the restaurant does served the best ayam bakar taliwang (smoked chilli chicken) and satay puset that we found on the island.

Nearby Ashtari, is a fabulous coffee shop with amazing views from the top of a hill just outside Kuta. It’s French-owned and is a lovely place for cake, healthy food, beautiful cereals, salads, sandwiches the most amazing chocolate cake with coconut cream sauce. They also run daily yoga classes at 7.30am on the terrace.

Bule is the best place to eat in Kuta. It’s run by the former head chef of Novotel and is a mixture of local and international food. The food is fantastic!

For Kids: There’s no dedicated menu but you’ll find kid-friendly stuff on the main menu and the kitchen are happy to make almost anything you might like.

Activities:

Activities for Parents: Swimming pool, beach, great surfing, weaving village where quality ikat and traditional cloth is made and sold, traditional Sasak villages, exploring the Gili Islands and yoga.
