Overland Jeep Adventure from Srinagar to Leh

Delhi – Srinagar – Sonamarg – Mulbec – Alchi – Leh – Delhi

DESCRIPTION

Watch your children turn into mini adventurers on this journey of a lifetime travelling from the fabled city of Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir to Leh, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Ladakh.

This 10-night trip has been specifically designed to allow children to slowly acclimatise to the altitude.

  • Explore Delhi, India’s colourful and chaotic capital city. Take a tour of Sir Edward Lutyen’s New Delhi, constructed in 1911 by the British or take a rickshaw ride through the crowded narrow lanes of the Old City.
  • Spend two nights on a traditional Kashmiri houseboat on fabled Dal Lake and enjoy a shikara ride along the waterways and channels. Visit the 700-year-old papier-mâché mosque, explore the copper bazaar and create your own Bollywood moment with a hop, skip and dance through the Mughal Gardens.
  • Experience Sonamarg and go walking in the beautiful countryside (it’s not called “Golden Meadow” for nothing), enjoy a pony ride or visit a local farm.
  • Driver over spectacular mountain passes and witness dramatic moon-like landscapes. You’ll sleep in tents (basic but comfortable with attached bathrooms) and either a local guesthouse or small hotel.
  • Pay a visit to the many local monasteries, home to frescos that are over 1000 years old, and enjoy (if you can!) a cup of salt butter tea, known locally as gurgur chai. Watch the young monks go about their daily rituals and try spinning the prayer wheels yourself.
  • Marvel at the ancient capital of the Himalayan Kingdom of Ladakh. Leh is positioned at an altitude of 3,524m (11,562 ft.) above sea level against the backdrop of the crumbling Leh palace, once home to Ladakh’s royal family.
  • Visit the Tibetan Refugee Camp in Choglamasar, drop by the Ecology Centre or practise your bargaining skills at the bazaar and fill your case with Tibetan antiques, religious artefacts, turquoise stones, woollen jumpers, silver jewellery, handicrafts and more.

KIDS

This itinerary has been designed for families with children age 5+ years (although younger kids have done it) with time for acclimatisation. By starting the holiday in Srinagar and gradually ascending to Leh families are given time to acclimatise and adapt to the altitude. There are some long drives involved and some windy mountain roads but you have the car and driver to yourself so you can stop and get out whenever you need to stretch your legs. This is definitely a holiday for adventurous families who are happy to forgo 5 star hotels but it really is the adventure of a lifetime.

On our blog – My Family Adventure

…..At the Thiksey Monastery, a monk took the time to answer, through a translator, the children’s many questions about the wheel of life that was colorfully painted on the wall. (“If I hit my sister, does it mean I’m coming back as a cow in the next life?”) At the Shanti Stupa, a young couple sat playing guitar and the children danced as the sun set. Read more …
