Beautiful British Columbia is an incredible destination for families with lots of fantastic accommodation options too. But where are the best places to stay? We round up our favourite family-friendly hotels in Vancouver, Whistler and Vancouver Island that will help make your family holiday to BC truly spectacular.
The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver
The fairytale Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is known as the ‘Castle in the City’ and is an utterly charming place to stay. Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, this family-friendly hotel was our home for three nights and we all wished we could have stayed longer. The current building is the third hotel to be named ‘Hotel Vancouver’ and eventually opened its doors, after an 11-year build, in 1839 in time for the Royal visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It’s fair to say that it is one of the grandest of Vancouver’s hotels and one of the city’s most treasured landmarks.
My children would happily move to the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver forever such was their enthusiasm for the hotel! Not only did they fall in love with hotel itself (it really does look like something that Walt Disney might have built) but they fell head over heals for Beau the Yellow Labrador, the Fairmont’s canine ambassador. Despite being somewhat elderly, kids can still take Beau for a walk to the nearest park and back, which was a trip highlight for my kids even if it was definitely Beau who led the way!
The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is located in downtown Vancouver. Vancouver International Airport is approximately 30 minutes away.
Lodging Ovations Evolution, Whistler
Located in family-friendly Whistler Creekside, Lodging Ovations Evolution offers traditional ski lodging with a modern twist. The accommodation is well appointed with an open-plan kitchen / dining area and living room. There’s also a private terrace that proved to be the perfect spot for a glass of wine once the kids had gone to bed! The location could not be better; across the street is Whistler Kids ski school and nursery and the ski slopes!
My three kids loved their stay here, and not just because they were given three very cute bears upon our arrival. We were provided a cot for our baby and the bigger kids shared one of the enormous King size beds. They all revelled in the equally large bath in their ensuite bathroom. There are two swimming pools (one dedicated to families), a cinema room with two daily movie screenings and a games room with table football and a Nintendo Wii.
Lodging Ovations Evolution is located in Whistler Creekside. It’s a two-hour drive from Vancouver to Whistler along the Sea to Sky Highway. Vancouver International Airport is the nearest airport.
L’Hermitage Hotel Vancouver
Positioned in the heart of Vancouver city, this family-friendly boutique hotel is within easy walking distance of the main shopping and restaurant districts, making it a great base from which to explore Vancouver. L’Hermitage has 60 rooms, located on the 5th, 6th and 7th floor of a residential tower. There’s a lovely restaurant, L’Orangerie lounge, where complimentary tea or coffee is served and a great selection of family accommodation. We booked a One-bedroom “home” that was perfect for our short stay and came with a fully-equipped kitchen and washer/dryer.
Highlights for our two oldest included the buffet breakfast where endless pastries, yoghurts and fresh fruit were available, and the fantastic rooftop saltwater swimming pool where they decided to spend most of the afternoon. But what really made this hotel stand out for us (and the reason why it’s the winner of numerous awards) is the service. The staff when we stayed were truly fantastic and nothing was too much trouble.
L’Hermitage Hotel Vancouver is located in downtown Vancouver. Vancouver International Airport is the closest airport, 13km away.
Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Hotel Resort & Spa, Vancouver Island
The Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort surely has one of the best addresses in all of Victoria. Located on the city’s Inner Harbour, overlooking downtown Victoria, the views here are simply unbeatable. Our kids spent hours watching life on the water go by from our ModeDeluxe hotel room; sea planes taking off and landing, kayakers kayaking and water taxis criss-crossing the bay. This is a big hotel, nevertheless the service is very personal. There’s a saltwater swimming pool, a fitness centre, LURE restaurant and a spa that enjoys a very good reputation.
For kids, there’s plenty on offer. Upon arrival the kids were each given a small present and we discovered cute animal towel shapes in our bathroom and popcorn in our bedroom. A baby cot was provided and there were even playpens, highchairs and booster seats available to borrow if we needed them. Children are given a Kids’ Pack with an activity booklet detailing kid-friendly activities available in Victoria and the hotel also provides a scavenger hunt. My favourite touch, however, was the milk and cookies at story time, held nightly in the lobby.
The hotel is located on Victoria’s inner harbour in Victoria, Vancouver Island. Victoria International Airport is the closest airport, located 27km away. The nearest ferry terminal is at Swartz Bay, 37km away.
The Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino, Vancouver Island
Usually referred to as ‘The Wick’, the Wickaninnish Inn is one of Tofino’s best-loved hotels. It’s also one of the area’s most luxurious and is a member of the Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel group. Located on a rocky promontory at one end of Chesterman Beach, this is the place to come to unwind and get away from it all; breathe in the fresh salt air, wander along the sand and watch the waves roll in. We stayed here for three nights and loved it. However, my one criticism is that the service can be very patchy. This is not uncommon in Tofino, a town where staff change with the seasons.
My kids loved everything about the Wickaninnish. We arrived to find a fantastic goody basket waiting for them, one of the best kiddie surprises that we’ve ever received from a hotel. The Wick supplies everything you could possibly need to make a family holiday comfortable including baby cribs and children’s raincoats. Our family highlight was s’mores on the beach when we spent the evening burning marshmallows and dripping melted chocolate onto the sand as the sun set over the ocean.
The Wickaninnish Inn is located 4.8km (2.5mi) before the town of Tofino on Vancouver Island. The Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ) is the nearest airport. Ferries from Vancouver and the Gulf Islands run to Squamish and to Nanaimo ferry terminals regularly.
